Let's Get Started.

Menopause is more than just a hormonal transition; it impacts every aspect of your body, including your skin. At Rachel Staggs Aesthetics, we have 25 years experience in menopausal skin care, working closely with clients to create personal treatment plans for real results. Whether you're just noticing a bit of dry skin on your face, or tackling something like menopausal breakouts, this article is the perfect place to start to support your skin's health during this pivotal time!

“Why do skin issues happen in menopause?"

During menopause, a woman's body undergoes significant hormonal changes, particularly a decline in oestrogen levels. Oestrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and vitality of the skin, so a decrease in its production can have various negative effects on the skin. Here's a closer look at how a decrease in oestrogen during menopause can impact your skin:

Decreased Collagen Production

Oestrogen helps stimulate collagen production in the skin. Collagen is a protein that provides structural support and elasticity to the skin. As Oestrogen levels decline, collagen production also decreases. This can lead to a loss of skin firmness and elasticity, resulting in sagging skin and the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

Reduced Hydration

Oestrogen contributes to the skin's ability to retain moisture by promoting the production of hyaluronic acid, a natural moisturising factor. With lower Oestrogen levels the skin may become drier and more prone to dehydration. Dry skin can feel rough, tight, and flaky, and it may exacerbate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Thinning of the Epidermis

Oestrogen helps maintain the thickness of the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. As the levels decline, the epidermis may become thinner, making the skin more fragile and susceptible to damage. Thinning of the epidermis can also impair the skin's ability to retain moisture and protect against environmental aggressors.

Increased Sensitivity

Oestrogen has anti-inflammatory properties that help calm and soothe the skin. During the times of hormonal change the skin may become more sensitive and reactive, leading to redness, irritation, and discomfort. Increased sensitivity can make it challenging to tolerate certain skincare products or environmental factors.

Changes in Pigmentation

Changes in hormone levels influence melanin production. During menopause, hormonal fluctuations can disrupt melanin regulation, leading to pigmentation problems such as uneven skin tone, dark spots, and melasma (patches of hyperpigmentation). These changes can affect the overall appearance and clarity of the skin.

Slower Cell Turnover

Oestrogen helps regulate the skin's natural renewal process by promoting cell turnover. With lower Oestrogen levels, the skin's ability to shed dead skin cells and generate new ones may slow down. This can contribute to dullness, rough texture, and a lackluster complexion.

Here are some key skin concerns we look out for during menopause…

The hormonal changes in menopause can lead to visible signs of ageing and have a real impact on some people’s confidence. Some common concerns we treat around menopause:

  • Increased wrinkles
  • Loose or ‘sagging’ skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Menopause Acne: Hormonal acne typically appears along the jawline, chin, and cheeks and is characterised by deep, painful cysts or pustules.
  • Dryness or Oiliness: Hormonal fluctuations can disrupt the skin's natural balance, leading to either excessive oil production or dryness and flakiness and often both can occur.
  • Sensitivity: Hormonal changes can make the skin more prone to irritation and sensitivity, resulting in redness, itchiness, or a stinging sensation
  • Uneven Texture: Hormonal imbalances may contribute to changes in skin texture, such as roughness, enlarged pores, or the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Hormonal fluctuations can trigger an increase in melanin production, leading to the development of dark spots or patches on the skin, known as melasma.

Our Top Lifestyle Tips for Healthier Skin in Menopause

Making lifestyle adjustments can also improve your skin's condition:

  • Balanced Diet: Nourish your skin from the inside with a diet rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and vitamins. Foods such as oily fish, nuts, and leafy greens can significantly improve skin health.
  • Regular Exercise: Enhances circulation and skin vitality. Activities like yoga and brisk walking are excellent for boosting blood flow and promoting collagen production.
  • Stress Management: Reduces stress-related skin issues. Techniques such as mindfulness meditation, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are effective for managing stress.
  • Sun Protection: Essential at every stage of life, but particularly during menopause when your skin becomes more susceptible to UV damage due to thinning skin.
  • Gentle Cleansing: Opt for mild, hydrating cleansers as aggressive products can further dry out and irritate menopausal skin.
  • Regular Exfoliation: Helps to remove dead skin cells and promote cell regeneration, but should be done gently to avoid damaging sensitive skin. These additional care tips can make a substantial difference in how your skin feels and appears during and after menopause.
